What’s this Wall Doing Here? | Activity
Conversation between Luz Broto, Elvira Dyangani Ose and the museum staff about the process of constructing the work a wall [A Wall] (from the project Extend the pillars [Prolonging the Pillars]) and the impacts it has had on both different museum staff and the visiting public. Before the conversation, Luz Broto will give a short guided visit to the work and the spaces around it.
On 29 November 2022, Elvira Dyangani Ose and Luz Broto signed the following agreement: “We will build a wall in the museum extending two of the pillars in the building from the base on the ground floor up to the ceiling on the second floor. From 13 December 2022, the wall will gradually grow until it closes off the main entrance to the MACBA rooms.”
Over the last two years, the work A Wall has been under construction in different phases, temporarily transforming the very architecture of the Meier Building. By the beginning of this year the wall had reached its final part, and the usual access to the exhibitions on the first and second floor has been altered. How are the people working at the museum experiencing the presence of the new wall? What spaces come into play when others are not accessible? How does the public react when they find an entrance to an open room closed off? What’s this wall doing here? The work invites visitors to discover other ways of getting around the museum and relating to it.
