The ‘Superestel Shepherds’ are back – Revista Teatre Barcelona

This Christmas, at the Jove Teatre Regina they are back Shepherdets Superestel. With 28 years of history, the longest running show of The Trepa returns to the stage to captivate family audiences. It will be on the billboard from December 6 to 30 and promises good doses of fun with a rock version of the traditional little shepherds.

At Can Regina they have three Christmas titles: Shepherdets Superestel, The Christmas story i The best letter to kings. Premiered and performed continuously (in 1998, 2005 and 2015, respectively), in recent years they have alternated to satisfy the public’s tastes. “We have fans of everything”, points out the director of Regina, Marion Campos. “This year only plays little shepherds! Depending on the mood, we opt for one show or another. The Christmas of Dickens it’s more about redemption and touching the soul, while that of the Pastorets is festive, about laughing and having a good time.”

A success with 15 years of history

This December, Shepherdets Superestel will reach its fifteenth season, with 300 functions and more than 60,000 spectators. A success that, in 2010, led to the renovation of the production, updating the scenography and modernizing the songs.

The work starts from an argumentative basis of Ricard Reguantconceived in the seventies, which has evolved slightly. One Christmas night, two brothers cross paths on the subway with a couple of immigrants who will spend the night there because they have not found any other shelter. There, a street musician tells them the story of shepherds who lived in Bethlehem more than two thousand years ago. “And here we stick with The Shepherds. The characters give a lot of play and every year we add jokes of our own harvest, like the ‘Damn it…!’ to connect with the present”.

Demons star in some of the most celebrated passages. “It’s very funny to see how they are, unfortunate! They try to deceive the boys and girls with manual tricks to take them to hell and it always goes wrong”. Campos also highlights the scene of the announcement and, as an anecdote, recalls: “In the first Shepherdets Superestelthe song was by Sister Act in Catalan. In the nineties you could do everything. Then we reversed it, also in a gospel key”.

The director of the Regina vindicates the value of putting on stage a cast of 12 performers: “Offering a show with so many actors and actresses at a family price is not easy at the level of a production company”, and encourages everyone to “go to the theater to see a real Catalan Christmas tradition”. “We pride ourselves on our ancestry and typical traditions, and The Shepherds they are We have softened the biblical part and they are shorter (they last 1 hour and 20 minutes, with a 10-minute intermission), but we keep the essentials: the story, the eternal battle between good and evil and the songs”.

Like the rest of little shepherds of the country, the super star have been a quarry for many performers, including Alicia Serrat, Marion Castillo, Carlota Olcina, Albert Ribalta, Henry Cambray, Oriol Tarrasón, Manel Sans, Ferran González i Patricia Paisal. “Many of the faces of the Memory world who have made a career in musicals have passed through here”. Recommended for ages 5 and up, it is also “a first gateway before going to see the older Shepherds”.
