‘The desired name’: sensitivity, tenderness and visibility


Badabadoc hosts the work The desired nameselected in the On el teatre batega 2024 call. A tender and moving piece that talks about Lua, who after understanding and sharing that she is a person with autism spectrum disorder with her classmates, ‘faces a new revelation: he wants everyone to call him Elio.

Driven by admiration a The Little Prince Pau Coyathe author of this piece, writes the protagonist’s story from the point of view of an adult, her father, who is accompanied by Mia’s mother, Lua’s best friend. “All the children are absent characters in the play. […] It’s nice to see how the father hesitates, but never stops fighting”, explains the playwright.

Although Pau Coya does not rule out directing one of his works, this theatrical production has the direction of Rebeca Del Fresnofriend and trusted colleague with whom she founded the company The Permanent in Mallorca and with whom he has worked in other works of his like kryptonite or sea ​​horse. Vanessa Segura i Alvar Triay they will interpret giving voice, figure and character to this story that explores the double violence that a minor can suffer for being neurodivergent and trans through the experience of the adults who accompany him.

After the great reception of his last work, diamond dusta piece that won him the 2024 Critic’s Award as Best New Author and the award for Best Local Show at the 2024 Teatre Barcelona Awards, Pau Coya’s new play lands in a room full of intimacy. Faced with this opportunity, the playwright assures that the story has been written with such care and delicacy that it is suitable for a family audience: “The previous plays I have written have a transgressive point that exposes themes that can be uncomfortable. This is presented as a breath of fresh air open to a much more transversal audience”.

“I would like the viewer to become a companion of this father who, despite being half lost in the face of a situation that is a mountain for him, fights to do things right”. With this illusion, the author of the work The desired name wishes to make it reach the maximum number of Catalan and Balearic theatres. Elio’s story, which is not based on any specific case, is ready to give visibility and normalize in the sweetest and most sensitive way the autistic children who discover their gender identity.
