Rural secrets and dark humor in ‘The Irish Bones’
Three veteran friends meet again in a village in rural Catalonia to face a secret forgotten for decades. This is the premise ofThe bones of the Irishmana black comedy that mixes tension, uncomfortable humor and a deep reflection on the fragility of human relationships. This is a text written by Victor Borras and directed by Xavier Ricartrecognized with the Quim Masó 2022 award, which after premiering at the Akademia Theater returns until February 12 at the Poliorama Theater.
A local comedy
“I wanted to write a rural drama where the protagonists were people from the territory”, says Borràs. The play’s dialogues are permeated with local expressions that bring a special authenticity to the plot, a fact highlighted by the actor Ivan Benet: “The text is contemporary, but the richness of the language gives it a unique dimension.”
Despite the depth of the subject, The bones of the Irishman is a black comedy that explores the dynamics between the three men. “Trying to find the truth of these characters, the comedy ends up emerging”, he explains Ernest Villegaswho plays Llorenç, a restaurateur who lives with his mother and suffers from constant anxiety. Ivan Benetwho gives life to Xevi, adds that the piece is a “biting” portrait of a generation “born with the pressure cooker of the seventies”. Pepo Blascoin the role of Hector, describes his character as “one of the causes of the conflict, a man who still carries the mistakes of the past”.
“The flaws of the characters are what make this story connect with the audience. They are men with their miseries and contradictions, trapped in a borderline situation that forces them to look in the mirror”, explains Ricart.
