We are. The homosexual movement during the Transition (1976-1979) is an example of the first steps of the LGBTI collective rights movement in Catalonia. The exhibition inserts a selection of photographs, posters and documentary and audiovisual materials in the permanent exhibition of the MHC. In this sense, we are complemented and dialogues with the Museum’s speech, while also connecting the recent past to the reality and sensitivity of today’s society. In Catalonia, where the Franco regime criminalized and treated LGBTI people as patients, underground activism began to organize. With the arrival of the Transition, the LGBTI collective rights movement consolidated with the creation of the Gay Liberation Front of Catalonia, a benchmark entity that promoted the first manifestation of gay pride in the State in 1977. The exhibition is part of the 50th anniversary of the death of dictator Francisco Franco and the recovery of democratic rights and freedoms.
