The Unexpected Festival | Gencat Cultural Agenda

The film festival The Unexpectedfocused on non-fiction, will celebrate its sixth edition in Barcelona from February 19 to 22.

A non-competitive exhibition that claims the diversity of non-fiction territories and the in-person cinematographic experience. This year, the festival presents a program made up of 8 sessions that include a total of 22 titles and a performance. Practically, all of the works programmed are unpublished in Catalonia.

The thematic axis explores recreations of the conflicted past. The films programmed approach distant conflicts from perspectives that invite critical reflection on memory, history and the present at a time marked, unfortunately, by nearby conflicts. Titles like River or death! by Igor Bezinović (2025), Green Linewith the presence of the French filmmaker Sylvie Ballyot and the Lebanese linguist and researcher Fida Bizri, or the participation of the Leonese filmmaker Carlos Balbuena, who will present four works from his filmography, among them Maybe in the fog (2026). The program also includes short films produced in Catalonia the sleeper by Maria Inês Gonçalves (2025).
