The exhibition offers an ethnological look at the popular knowledge and cultural practices that have accompanied women throughout their life cycle, from menarche to beyond menopause. Through this tour, you are invited to reflect on how women’s bodies have been treated during the last century and to what extent their knowledge about their own health, desire and physiological transformations has been valued—or silenced. Society has generated a network of taboos, controls and silences that have conditioned the way we understand and live the female body. The story also highlights that being a woman and learning to be one has always been a complex process, shaped by each historical and social context. Today, capitalism has turned the female body into an object of consumption and medicalization, presenting life cycles as a standardized and modifiable female identity. The exhibition explores how Catalan women have learned and shared knowledge about fertility, sexuality, abortion and health, as well as the way in which society has shaped their bodily experience through material and immaterial culture.
