Next Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at 6 p.m., the presentation of the book will take place in the Sala de la Caritat of the Library of Catalonia Catalan Diction for Singers. A Practical Guideby Patricia Caicedo. The event will have the participation of the author and the poet Carles Duarte i Montserrat, who wrote the prologue of the work.
This guide is aimed at singers and music professionals from all over the world, and provides them with a practical and rigorous pedagogical tool for the acquisition of accurate Catalan diction. The book stands out for the methodology of comparative Catalan-English phonetics, which allows English-speaking interpreters to understand and safely incorporate the sounds specific to Catalan.
The volume includes a detailed explanation of the phonetic system of Central Catalan – vowels, consonants, diphthongs and reduction phenomena – presented in an accessible way and oriented to the needs of the interpreter. In addition, it offers phonetic transcriptions (using the International Phonetic Alphabet) of song texts and auditory examples from the “Els sons del català” resource of the University of Barcelona, accessible through QR codes integrated into the book.
Catalan Diction for Singers. A Practical Guide it also includes an introductory study on the history and evolution of the Catalan language, as well as a reflection on its cultural projection. The book contributes to giving visibility to the Catalan lyrical heritage and to facilitate access to it for performers from various linguistic contexts, with the aim of strengthening the presence of the Catalan language in international settings.
Patricia Caicedo, author of the book, is a soprano, musicologist and doctor, specializing in Iberian and Latin American artistic song. She is the founder of the Barcelona Festival of Song and director of the Latin American and Spanish Vocal Music Collection. He has published eleven albums and numerous articles and books and stands out for his work in the internationalization of Catalan artistic song, with recordings, premieres and educational activities around the world.
