10/07 – 9.30 p.m. Screen Barcelona Summer: Far away
Synopsis:
Sergio (Mario Casas) arrives in Utrecht with his brother and a group of fans to watch a RCD Espanyol game. The trip is short and festive, but everything changes when, before returning to Barcelona, he suffers a panic attack and makes a radical decision: to stay without telling anyone. Without money, without work and without speaking the language, he begins an uncertain drift where he only finds complicity in another Catalan expatriate, Toni (David Verdaguer), while he tries to understand why he has broken with the life he had.
In his first film, Gerard Oms constructs an intimate drama about identity, migration and masculinity that progresses through both silences and dialogues. Shot with naturalism and edited by Neus Ballús (Six days running, Marta’s journey, the plague…), the film portrays European precariousness after the 2008 crisis, while accompanying the protagonist in a process of personal acceptance. The interpretation of Mario Casas – with memorable scenes with David Verdaguer – has earned him several nominations at festivals and won the Gaudí award for the best male protagonist. At the Malaga Festival, Casas also received the prize for the best performance.
