Workshop by Omar Itani | Activity

This workshop aims to combine the collective learning and thinking by doing approach of the Radio Web MACBA Working Group with the work of Lebanese sound artist and cultural organizer Omar Itani.

During this workshop, participants will unpack Omar Itani’s practice and the Lebanese cultural scene in which he operates, with special emphasis on community and collaborative practicesencouraging experimentation and the exchange of knowledge.

An active member of the Beirut Synthesizer CenterOmar Itani has experience working in radio, film, experimental composition and improvisation, as well as coordinating and curating events at festivals such as Irtijal and Night of Drones from the Rooftops at the Beirut Art Center. His porous and often collaborative practice understands sound as a meeting space, offering a way of learning, imagining and building community. This has led to his collaborations with visual artists such as Panos Aprahamian, Yaniya Mikhalina and Haig Aivaziantaking care of the sonic aspect of some of their works. At the same time, he continues to develop his own musical practice as a noise artist. His deep listening to the surroundings and the resulting sonic materials feed back into his experience, and improvisation becomes a space for exploration, dialogue and continuous experimentation that connects intuition and composition.
