Vivian Friedrich’s glass circus

We all have memories of our childhood. Vivian Friedricha German creator who has been around Catalonia since 2007, has memory of the glasses and glass objects that her grandparents had at home. All this glassware was melted in a family factory in the Bohemian region in Germany. Over time, Friedrich has staged these emotions and memories and made a trilogy that began in 2022 with Crystall Bohème and continues now with a second half, titled Sklenka Melta (glass and melt) that will be seen for two days (July 3 and 4) at the Sant Andreu Teatre (SAT!).

The search for the creation of this second piece lasted a whole year, with the collaboration of the glassmaker Ferran Collado And he included two visits to the town of Novy Bor (Czech Republic) and the Novotny Glass glass factory, where the glass ball that appears in the work was made. Friedrich, promoter of the project through the new company that has created, Diffractionartexplains some characteristics of the glass: “It is a strong and fragile material at a time; we never know when it breaks and that is why we have to work with confidence and respect at the same time.”

Between the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024 a laboratory was performed at the Circus Central and the Auditions to choose the team on stage: the juggler Augustinethe performer Clara Cortés and the acrobat and juggle Jorge Castro. On stage we will also see Vivian Friedrich, who assumes many of the most risk scenes of a creation that includes glass intestines, glass balls, tubes and a delicate spine of glass of glass that Friedrich carries up and down inside a suitcase.

Friedrich gives some clues to creation, which has an external gaze ofElena Zanzu and music of Maider Lasa Santamaría. “It is a piece focused on the body and the way the balances transform into the position.” The creation includes an audiovisual that shows the way the pieces have been made and develops with a calm pace, like the one that the glass needs to cool. Friedrich explores the contrasts that do not oppose but are complemented, like the organs of the human body. We will see manipulation of objects, dance, faquirism and funambulism on glass. And attention, some glass tubes will be broken. The slices will not be thrown into the garbage but will be part of the third of the trilogy that in March will be seen in the Brossa Space with the title And trust you.
