Theater to de -stigmatize cancer
One of the great virtues of theater is its healing capacity: emotions, traumas, sensations … There are montages that cross your whole body and penetrate the most hidden corners of our feelings. The montage is an adaptation of the novel of the same name Patrick Nesswhich won nine Goya Awards and Eight Gaudí converted into a movie in 2016 thanks to Juan Antonio Bayona. This adaptation, however, is “more faithful to the book”, as it explains Roger Berruezoactor who is part of the montage.
The work deals with cancer from the point of view of a child who has the sick mother. The work appears to blame and sadness, complicated feelings of managing at any age, but even more so during childhood. The work aims to “end the stigmatization” of cancer in order to speak openly. “Everyone knows someone who suffers, suffered or died because of this disease. We need to be able to talk about it,” says Berruezo.
In fact, this is one of the goals of the young person, the company in charge of creating this piece. “ We usually do many colloquiums. In some very interesting things come out. In a morning function, a girl dared to explain that she was crossing a situation like the one explained in the work. There are others who thank us. For things like these I already find it very worthwhile, ” says the actor of the play.
One of the other strengths of the function is the visual power of the assembly. As Roger Berruezo explains, it is a great choreography of movements and displacements of chairs – they use to create the different spaces – that create a dynamic and fluid work. In addition, a tree with almost 30 screens helps illustrate the “story”, as Berruezo refers to the work.
The theatrical adaptation ofA monster viene a verme It seeks to be faithful to the book, adding the magic that a play brings. “ The people who have read the book or have seen the film seek in the theater that they tell a story that they liked in a different way, ” says Roger Berruezo, who also believes that “ people are very predisposed to play and get carried away by what we show. It is a type of imaginary that only achieves the theater. ”
After premiering in Madrid and performing for two weeks, he lands at the Apolo Theater during April and will continue the tour to Malaga and Mallorca. “The answer to Madrid was very and very good. We may have done more functions, but there were no days available to extend,” says the actor, adding: “In each city acting is different, although the answer I think will be very similar everywhere where we do it.”
