Experiments for the city

This season, the Joan Brossa Foundation wants to locate the Liberal Arts Center in the city and turn it into a open space close to citizens. A place to come to find experimental proposals and to feel at home inhabiting the various spaces and activity formats offered by the Centre. The graphic image created by Irena Visa for the communication campaign of the season pursues this desire, all the while featuring pigeons, also inhabitants of the city of Barcelona, accompanied by messages that define with an ironic look what the Liberal Arts Center is and what it offers in every sense (theatre, free wi-fi, toilets, exhibitions… and rare things).

Contemporaneity in a social, political and artistic key

With 28 shows and 8 exhibitions and installations, this new program consolidates La Brossa as a space for risk, experimentation and the hybridization of artistic languages, with projects that exude protestant attitudes and against immobility. In the words of the artistic director, Maria Canelles i Georgina Oliveit is “a collective demonstration that highlights non-conformism in the face of uniformism and its derivations”, proposals that drink from contemporaneity in a social, political and artistic key.

visual arts

The branch of visual arts continues to generate the same question with the desire to inventory multiple answers: what makes Brossa Brossa, what is the “Brossa gesture” and where can we find it? A way of approaching the poet’s legacy that forces us to interrogate him from the point of view of strict contemporaneity. That is why, this autumn, a new exhibition focusing on the object-oriented work of Joan Brossa, curated by Marc Navarro, Say whatwhich will bring the Brossian object poems into dialogue with pieces by other contemporary Catalan and international artists.

The season begins, however, with the last week of the exhibition Astral Summarycurated by Catherine Admiral with the collaboration of Claudia Elias. Following the same desire to search for those artists who maintain radical attitudes towards artistic creation, this year’s Postbrossa call (the support line for the production and exhibition of visual arts in La Brossa) has two projects: Fables for an animal economy ofAdrian Julian i dysfunctional of Tanit Plana. Finally, the line of research is consolidated with projects that allow the creation of a Brosian geneology from a contemporary perspective: with the Exhibition of anti-fascist varieties curated by Marcelo Expósito i Beds and mummies (or trace a letter to be able to cut the shadow) in care ofHelena Laguna, Biel Llinàs i Mireia Molina and result of the PIC (Curatorial Research Program) with the collaboration of the Sala d’Art Jove. Finally, pursuing the goal of internationalizing the figure of Brossa, the Foundation presents the exhibition in Manchester The mental feeling of complete happiness curated by Anna Llopis and which could be seen until June at the Liberal Arts Centre.

On the other hand, the spring will have as its protagonist the cinema with the cycle Portabella, agent provocateur, which starts from the artistic relationship and friendship between Joan Brossa i Peter Portabella to highlight Brossa as a “provocative agent” for the filmmaker, in the words of Portabella himself.
