The Carme Junyent Chair of Studies on Catalan Language and Society is born at the Belgian University of Mons – Detail current


Her Université de Mons It launches the Carme Junyent Chair on Catalan Language and Society within the framework of its collaboration agreement with the Ramon Llull Institute and with the funding of the Institute of Recherche pour le Développement Sociétal et Territorial (Institut Partner & Ter) of the same university.

This chair aims to deepen the interactions between language and society from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective, faithful to the intellectual legacy of Professor Carme Junyent. The activities of the Chair include the promotion of research in Catalan sociolinguistics and linguistic studies linked to linguistic diversity, the dynamization of training initiatives for postgraduate and doctoral students, and the organization of international academic events.

Each course is planned to invite a visiting teacher to stay at the University and offer an open conference on the central topics of the Chair. In the first year of the chair, in 2025-26, the guest will be the teacher Michel Martínezdirector of the Center for Catalan Estudes de Sorbonne Université (Paris).

The public presentation of the Chair will take place on June 20, within the framework of the day “Sociolinguistics in the Occitan -Catalan Space. Challenges, looks and possibilities for dialogue“, to be held in the Nicolau de Olwer room of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (IEC). This day is the result of a collaboration between the Carme Junyent Chair and the Catalan Society of Sociolinguistics (SOCS), a subsidiary of the IEC.
