Shakespeare A la Fresca – Magazine Teatre Barcelona


As every summer, Parking Shakespeare Returns the spiral of the North Station Park with free theater and the outdoors. July 3 to 28, the company represents Cimbelina tragicomedy of William Shakespeare which presents for the first time under the direction of Jenny BeacraftAmerican artist based in Barcelona. The montage is based on the Catalan translation of the poet and essayist Salvador Olivaa benchmark in the contemporary version of the Shakespearean work in our country.

Written at the end of Shakespeare’s career, Cimbelin mix elements of several of his best -known works – the secret love of Romeo and Julietthe jealousy ofOtellothe magical symbolism of The storm– And it makes a piece that ranges from drama and farce. It is an adventure full of identity messes, costumes, disappearances, delusions, revelations and reconciliations.

“The result is a crazy adventure filled with equivocal identities, gender changes and blatant deceptions,” explains the company’s artistic director, Pep Garcia-Pascualwhich emphasizes the richness of delusional characters: “ An ineffective king, an evil stepmother who hides lethal intentions behind his smile, his narcissistic son in the manners of Mama’s son quiniere, a hijacked twins, a greater love story than life, and perhaps the bravest heroine of Shakespeare: imogenous ”.

For Beacraft, Cimbelin It is a seemingly light work, with live music, exaggerated gesture and a decidedly festive tone, but full of meaning. “The characters emerge as if they came out of a children’s story book, but the world they inhabit is far from innocent,” he says. Under the reign of Cimbelí, he says, “transparency and equality are more and more unattainable” and has appeared “a reactionary feeling of scarcity that pushes people to accumulate and hoard, patrolling borders and closing doors”.

The show addresses, with an ironic and playful tone, deeply rooted behaviors: “Submission to authority, fear of difference, paternalistic attitudes towards women.” Beacraft argues that Shakespeare uses theatrical magic to explore the human condition, not with reasoning, but with chaos, laughter and emotion. And he summarizes this: “Healing does not arrive in a straight line: he stumbles, loses, falls and somehow finds his way.”

The cast consists of eight performers who embody up to fourteen characters. Rebeca del Fresno interprets imogenous and Santi Monreal assume four different roles. They also take part Adrià Díaz, José Pedro García Balada, Cris Martínez, Ariadna Matas, Pep Garcia-Pascual and Lluís Oliver.

Make outdoor theater

The space – the Espiral of the Tilers Park – poses technical and dramaturgical challenges: there is no set, no lights or artificial sound. The team describes the experience as “a mini -school of how to do text theater on the street”. That is why they recommend the audience to bring a pillow, a range and a fresh drink.

With Cimbelin its 24th production, Parking Shakespeare keeps the founding objective alive: to offer quality theater and accessible. Last year they exceeded 7,000 spectators and now they hope to repeat their success.
