Masks that speak – Magazine Teatre Barcelona


July 23-27, the Condal Theater host Foreverthe new show of Kulunka Teatro Within the Greek festival. After the international success ofAndré and Dorine and Solitudethe Basque company returns with its particular language: the theater of masks and without words. Forever It portrays the contemporary family and its contradictions with an aesthetic close to the cinema, with humor and a striking emotion.

The work delves into the life of a couple and their son, and as the passage of time, frustrated expectations and lack of communication can turn love into a silent prison. Maternity, fatherhood, disability and education are some of the thematic axes of this piece built on a rotating platform. “It’s a carousel, the wheel of life, but also a spiral that, as it turns, delves into the pain of the protagonists,” he says José Daultfounder and interpreter of the company. And the most disturbing: Forever It could be the story of any of us.

Dault passionately describes the process of collective creation that has shaped the show: “To do masks we have to talk a lot. It’s paradoxical, but we spend a lot of time verbalizing what we want to explain and how we are excited. It allows us to be accurate in the gesture and transmit without words.” For Daault, rigor and self -demand are fundamental pillars of his work: “We are constantly in doubt. It’s exhausting, but it’s also the way to get something that really fills us.”

This new proposal, which was born of the desire to continue to explore the family microcosm, shows a rejuvenated version of its usual characters: “We are now parents, we have creatures. This crosses us and feeds our creative universe,” says the actor. The direction ofIñaki Rikarte and the original music of Luis Miguel Cobo They play a key role: “Music puts us emotionally. It accompanies us like a sensory compass,” says Dault. The combination of this sound universe with the constant movement of the set creates an almost cinematic experience: “The platform turning a sense of sequence, as if we were watching a live movie.”

Despite the rawness of the topics he deals with, Forever He does not give up hope or tenderness: “ I think there is always an option, a gap to do things differently, ” says Daault, adding: “ The mask opens a channel to emotions free of noise.
