This 2025 is celebrated two hundred years since the birth of the poet, bibliophile and linguist Marià Aguiló i Fuster (Palma de Mallorca, 1825 – Barcelona, ​​1897), considered one of the most influential Catalan scholars of the 19th century, thanks to the absolute commitment he maintained with the Catalan language.

Its legacy embraces from the poetic work, the philological work, the critical edition of the classics and the recovery of popular literature, to the formation of an extraordinary library, origin of the founding collection of the Library of Catalonia. Marià Aguiló, a key figure in the Catalan Renaissance, contributed to the cultural movement of recovery of Catalan language and literature, and built foundations that still endure.

With the aim of remembering this patrician of letters and books, the Library of Catalonia organizes a conference and a round table, which will take place on Thursday 16 and Wednesday 22 October, at 6 pm, in the Charity Room of the BC.

  • Conference “Marià Aguiló, 1825-1897, resemblance of a man of letters”, by Margalida Tomàs i Vidal, historian of Catalan literature and a recognized specialist in the figure of Marià Aguiló.

  • Round table “The survival of the Marià Aguiló Library”moderated by Núria Altarriba, director of the bibliographic unit of the Library of Catalonia. They will participate as speakers: Albert Corbeto, art historian; Anna Gudayol, head of the BC Manuscripts Section, and Marta Navarro, librarian of the BC Printed Reserve Section.
