Lucia Del Greco reviews the myth of the March sisters
This October, Teatre Lliure premieres a new reading of the classic by Louisa May Alcott Little Womenknown to the general public by the title of its Spanish translation, little women. The director Lucia Del Greco proposes a free and contemporary version of this universal story about femininity, family and the passage of time. The show can be seen until November 30, with a cast made up of Elisabet Casanovas, Joan Esteve, Mia Esteve, Paula Jornet, Miriam Moukhles i Blanca Valletbó.
Based on the classic novel The four March sisterspublished in 1868, the play chronicles the lives of four sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—who grow up in the middle of the American Civil War while trying to define their identity and their place in the world. Her struggle to reconcile personal dreams with social expectations has turned the story into one of the great literary references on the female condition.
A critical look at history
The director proposes a critical look at the myth of the March sisters, protagonists of the story, starting from the original novel to question the role of women, the male gaze, aesthetic pressure and ideals of perfection. “I wanted to remove the social and family burden from the March sisters, and I wondered what these characters would be like if they hadn’t been able to marry or have children,” explains Del Greco.
The montage plays with cultural memory and invites the public to contrast their memory of the novel or the film adaptations with their new reading. “It’s very interesting that the viewer arrives with their own prejudices and expectations about these characters, because this allows them to explode on stage”, adds the director.
The scenography and lighting is proposed by Cube.bzwhich turns the March sisters into dolls in a shop window. The show combines dance, singing and live music, with original music by Pol Batllemovement of Lorena Nogal i Ariadna Monfortsound of Roc Mateu and wardrobe of Pau Aulí Nadal. “It was clear from the beginning that I wanted to work with creative actresses, willing to leave the most conventional theatrical language and understand the scene as a total experience”, concludes the director.
