July and August at the Filmoteca de Catalunya

The programming of the Filmoteca for the summer of 2025 has six major cycles. In July, August and September, the bulk of the offer focuses on these programs.

You will find everything François Truffautthe feminist look of the Czech Vera Chytilováa Hollywood classic, George Cukor, The circus arts With the Greek festival, The rules of the game. Cinema and sport In collaboration with Santa Mònica, and The rest! Summer Readrenes With the recovery of last year’s essential titles.

Summary of the cycles:

  • Vera Chytilová. Vera Chytilová (1929-2014) occupies a place of honor among the most iconoclast, transgressive and protein figures of the seventh art. Key figure in the new Czech cinema of the sixties, she was the only woman in this film current she studied at the Prague Film Academy (FAMU). Known by The daisies (1966), his most emblematic work, Chytilová defied both the expressive conventions of cinema and ideological impositions through a unique style that combined acid humor, visual poetry and an insolent spirit of rebellion. Creator of unmanageable female characters, with a masterful montage domain and creative freedom intolerable for censorship and more reactionary looks, Chytilová’s cinema is both moral satire, feminist revolt and a constant exercise in formal reinvention.
  • François Truffaut. François Truffaut (1932-1984) turned his love for cinema into a way of looking and understanding life. In its beginnings as a critic to Cahiers du cinémawas one of the creators of the author’s “theory”, which considers the director the total manager of the film. In 1959 bursts with strong The 400 coupsa film inspired by its painful childhood and with which it becomes one of the main promoters of the Nouvelle Vague, the current that begins the cinema of modernity and of which it becomes the most famous filmmaker thanks to a work filled with humanism and romanticism and aimed at the taste of the public. Women, books, childhood and death are the basic axes of a filmography characterized by absolute sincerity and in which the autobiographical element is always present, especially through the character of Antoine Doinel, his alter ego on the screen.
  • The circus arts. With the complicity of the Greek Summer Festival of Barcelona, we propose a fascinating journey through the world of circus, which has tempted filmmakers from all eras, styles and backgrounds. Universe of impossible balance, magic, humor and risk, the circus has called powerful images and intense emotions. We propose a deliberately heterogeneous journey that invites us to discover it as a community space for dissent, creation, enjoyment and collective memory. The cycle also extends to the Familia Filmoxica sessions in the summer, and opens on Wednesday, July 2 with a very special session that will combine pieces by Second Chomón with the live performance of the Acrobat Group Eunoia Koluctiva, with musical accompaniment by the pianist Francesc Mora.
  • George Cukor. George Cukor (1899-1983) settled in Hollywood at the beginning of the sound and took advantage of his theatrical background to develop a conception of cinema based on the importance of dialogues and acting management. In the more than fifty films he directed, spread over all kinds of genres, he knew how to impose his sense of the show. With the perfect balance he established between sophistication, elegance and sense of humor and his ability to convey the subtlety of certain situations, he excelled in melodrama and high comedy. He defined the Hollywood’s great actress career-with Katharine Hepburn at the helm-offering characters who shun the prevailing stereotypes, full of nuances, contradictions and humanity.
  • The rest! Summer Readrenes. The opportunity to repeat a good handful of releases of 2024 chosen by the Filmoteca team. Great hits of the year, films with a fleeting career in Sales, works that deserve to be seen again. In the best tradition of summer cinemas re -cinemas: on a big and without interruption screen, sharing community experience!
  • The rules of the game. Cinema and sport. Cinema and sport have historically shared a peculiar symbiotic relationship, marked by the fascination with moving bodies and the ability to generate a great sense of community. On the occasion of the exhibition Cytissimum altissimum fortissimum From the Santa Mònica Arts, a cycle of films in which sport, be it as a social thermometer, as a pure athletic exhibition or as an instrument to reinvent its rules, is the center. The selection includes approaches to sport stars such as Barça Hugo’s former footballer ‘El cholo’ subil or Zinedine Zidane, and a gender -based film in a sexist aspects as sports. With the collaboration of the FUCAV research project (Pompeu Fabra University).
