On Monday, March 16, gastronomy will be the backbone of the new edition of “From Xarxa Llull to the world”, the online activity organized in collaboration with students and professors of Catalan studies abroad in order to spread Catalan culture throughout the Xarxa Llull, and to anyone interested.
Every year members of the Llull Network, the network of foreign universities that teach Catalan, propose an activity related to Catalan culture that is worked on in groups. In this case, the topic chosen was the cuisine of the Catalan-speaking territories.
The activity will take place at the headquarters of the Ramon Llull Institute in Barcelona, and can be followed live through the IRL’s YouTube channel. It will start at 18:00 with a short presentation of Josep-Anton Fernandezdirector of the Language Area of the IRL. This will be followed by an interview with the expert professor of Catalan cuisine Rose Song. Then there will be a round table on the relationship between gastronomy and literature. The conversation, moderated by Paula Moléswill have the interventions of the chefs Carlota Claver, Pau Sintes i Solar Seaand will be structured in three thematic blocks introduced by videos where students of Catalan will read literary texts linked to gastronomy.
The three blogs will address the gastronomy of the Catalan Countries, the traditional cuisine – with the reading of a fragment of Boulder ofEva Baltasar— and the local product, the lexicon and gastronomic expressions — with a fragment of the narrow street of Josep Plaread by Abbie Kingstudent at the University of Manchester. After the debate and the moderator’s conclusions, there will be a summary of the cooking workshop that university students held with the chef from Menorca Pau Sintes. Finally, the writer Martí Sales will perform a recital based on texts worked on by students from the UK and Ireland.
The act is linked to centenary of Catalan Studies at the University of Liverpool and will have the participation of Catalan language and culture students from universities in the United Kingdom and Ireland. These universities are the following: University of Birmingham, University of Bristol, University of Cambridge, University College Dublin, Durham University, University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, King’s College London, University of Manchester, Newcastle University, University of Oxford and University of Sheffield.
