Exhibition “Who fears ideology? Part 5: Right of way”
Marwa Arsanios (Washington DC, 1978) presents Who fears ideology? Part 5: Right of waya co-production with the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (Turin) and Artium Museoa (Vitòria-Gasteiz). This film constitutes the fifth installment in the ongoing series Who is Afraid of Ideology? (2017-), a long-range project in which the artist investigates issues related to property, law, economics and ecology. From land rights to forms of community self-organization and self-defense, Arsanios examines strategies with which various collectivities confront colonial-capitalist structures – whether family, state or corporate – in the territories of Kurdistan, Iraq, north-west Syria, Lebanon and Tolima, in Colombia.
Cinema, for Arsanios, is understood as a device for intertwining struggles and tracing resonances between situated contexts, crossed by the urgency of imagining forms of life in common. Recently, the Heidelberger Kunstverein (Germany), Mosaïc Rooms (London), the Contemporary Arts Center (Cincinnati), the Škuc Gallery (Ljubljana) and the Beirut Art Center have dedicated individual exhibitions to him. His work has also been presented at Documenta 15 (Kassel, 2022), the 5th Mardin Biennale (2022), the 3rd Autostrada Biennale (Pristina, 2021) and the 11th Berlin Biennale (2020), among others.
