exhibition "We were afraid, but we had to get out"
When commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of the dictator Francisco Franco and the subsequent arrival of democracy, “We were afraid, but we had to get out” vindicates the struggle, still valid and necessary, of the activists of the LGBTIQ+ group in the Spanish State; people who were a battering ram for the achievement of rights and freedoms, who still took time to arrive and who are again in danger. The project – started in 2022 by photographer Aitor Fernández and journalist Verónica Taranilla, members of the DateCuenta Association – collects the history of the struggle in Barcelona, Andalusia and Madrid, the epicenters of activism in Spain. The exhibition is explained through portraits and the first-person voice of its protagonists. These testimonies are interspersed with personal photographic archives and a specific selection of documents from the time. You can find more information about the exhibition “We had but, but we had to leave” on the website of the Can Basté Photographic Residence. Last update: 12/17/2025
