Walker Evans (1903–1975) is an essential figure in modern photography and one of America’s great visual chroniclers of the 20th century. His images, with a simple appearance but deep complexity, lucidly portray everyday life, urban landscapes and the anonymous faces of a country undergoing transformation. A pioneer of the documentary style, Evans combined a direct and austere look with an inexhaustible curiosity for the signs of popular culture, which led him to define an era at the same time as questioning it. The exhibition Walker Evans: Now and Then, curated by David Campany, creative director of the International Center of Photography in New York, proposes a wide-ranging review of his work and his lasting influence on generations of artists. It brings together key photographs and projects spanning his entire career—from the self-portraits of the 1920s to his experiments with Polaroid in the 1970s—along with books and publications that reflect his inexhaustible capacity for observation.
