Exhibition “Miró and the United States”

The exhibition is an intergenerational dialogue between Joan Miró and American artists, which shows how their creative practices enriched each other and contributed to the development of 20th century art.

Through this exchange, the exhibition reconfigures the understanding of the place Miró’s work occupies in the history of art: the usual focus on France shifts, and the United States is positioned as a central axis in its artistic evolution. This new narrative not only revisits Miró’s legacy, but also highlights the relevance of many women artists of the time. These creators were essential in the redefinition of contemporary art, either as references for other artists or as protagonists of innovative currents such as gestural painting, abstraction and action painting.

At the center of Exchanges: Miró and the United States is the period defined by Miró’s two retrospectives in New York, in 1941 and 1959, and the seven visits he made to the United States between 1947 and 1968, which allowed him to extend connections. The exhibition includes around 160 works from American and European collections, and also from the Fundació Joan Miró itself, both by Miró and by a range of artists of various generations: Louise Bourgeois, Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Arshile Gorky, Alice Trumbull Mason, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, among many others.
