‘Els Malvats’, a parody of spies at the Teatre Gaudí

The Gaudí Theater presents from November 21 to December 14 The Wickeda comedy that turns the spy genre into a parody full of messes. The play follows a professional skier caught up in an international conspiracy in the middle of the Cold War, and unfolds a plot that moves between misunderstandings, disoriented agents and unexpected twists. The assembly, written by Biel Perelló and directed by Albert Gonzálezbets on a cinematographic root humor and a cast of seven actors, Pep Muñoz, Diana Torné, Emili Corral, Ester Cort, Laia Alsina i Cesc Casanovaswho play more than thirty characters.

A piece with cinematic airs

The proposal uses resources close to the cinematographic language to bring to the stage the universe of espionage thrillers. The director explains that they have worked with a very strong visual idea, to the point of setting up the stage “like a kind of filming set”, and of debuting a costume created to reinforce this atmosphere.

The play follows Jimmy O’Hara, a skier and family man who sees his life turned upside down when he is banned from a world tournament, his best friend is murdered and his son is kidnapped. This starting point projects him into a web of spies, double-dealing and confusion in a divided Warsaw during the Cold War, where he tries to understand what is going on while becoming an unwitting piece of an international cog.

The Wicked it uses resources typical of parody: breaking the fourth wall, explicit references to suspense cinema and a deliberate use of real names within the fiction. The play, which first premiered in 2009, now returns in an updated version that adapts the pace and production design to a contemporary audience, with a flexible stage space capable of recreating dozens of locations.
