Display "Marta Palau. My roads are terrestrial"
Thinking the earth, the geography, the body. Break a dialogue of techniques and subjects that spin experience and life incarnation. The Tàpies Museum presents for the first time a great retrospective by the artist Marta Palau (Albesa, Lleida, 1934 – Mexico City, 2022) with the title My Roads are terrestrial, which includes drawing, painting and some of its large textile facilities, in dialogue with objects and materials from its personal archive, which have never been exposed. The set is presented as a network of bodies/works structured from two main axes that cohabit from its opponents: the idea of the land linked to exile and the reception, understood as a wound and scar, and the idea of the body, which represents the pain of migrant and loss, but also the healing and the possibility of generating life. It is interesting to attend to how in Palau, everything is filtered from his own biography, an experience that is also expanded and remained in effect through the conflicts that characterize our contemporaneity, as well as their possibilities of transformation. The exhibition, in co -production with the MUAC (University Museum of Contemporary Art of the National Autonomous University of México), will travel in the fall to the Mexican headquarters. The project becomes the first major sample internationally after the death of the Catalan artist, which was exiled to Tijuana in 1941 as a result of the Franco dictatorship. The artist’s relationship with textiles originates from contact with certain ancestral traditions of the American continent, his learning with Josep Grau-Garriga, a textile teacher who collaborated with Joan Miró or Antoni Tàpies, among others, will be decisive to delve into the tapestry technique. Throughout his career, Palau developed several facets, including the creation of structures to support art and artists, and he had wide recognition in some of the great artistic events in South America, such as the Biennial of São Paulo or the Biennial of Havana, among many others.
