Display "Antoni Tàpies. The imagination of the world"

The Monographic Project Antoni Tàpies. The imagination of the world will propose a review of the work of Antoni Tàpies based on the ideas contained in its earliest production. Taking the figure of Tàpies as a central node, the exhibition will try to map a network of relationships between agents, speeches and practices around two axes: on the one hand, the complex assimilation of artistic currents – Dada, surrealism – and thought – psychoanalysis, Marxism – in the Barcelona of the time; and, on the other, the dialogue that these movements established with various forms of vernacular tradition and popular culture. The selection of materials will focus on the period from the beginning of the 1940’s until the mid -1950’s, although it will also suggest possible continuities and breaks over the following decades. The exhibition takes its title of an essay published by the artist in 1999, in which the ideas of interdisciplinarity and interculturality occupy a central place. From theoretical positions that seek to go beyond the history of art and the biographical model, this exhibition will bring together a multiplicity of aesthetic objects of various origins with a triple objective: first, to expand the genealogies of the Tapià universe towards less common references, analyzing not only texts and images, but also contexts and imaginaries; Second, problematize certain debates of the moment on the academy, primitives, body, nature or show, among others, and third, critically recover from the present those aspects that allow us to continue to imagine new ways of being in the world.
