Discovery of the commemorative plaque in honor of Antoni Gaudí

The event commemorates the centenary of the death ofAntoni Gaudí (1852–1926) at the same point on the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes where he was hit by a tram on June 7, 1926. The tribute combines historical memory, institutional recognition and artistic evocation to place Gaudí’s figure in its human and urban context.

This act is part of theGaudí Year., promoted by the institutions to commemorate the centenary of his death and highlight his figure and his universal legacy. The commemoration coincides with a particularly significant moment: it takes place three days before the inauguration of the Jesus Christ tower of the Sagrada Família, scheduled for June 10, the date of the architect’s death.

Antoni Gaudí i Cornet, born in 1852, is one of the key figures of universal architecture and the greatest exponent of Catalan modernism. His career is deeply linked to Barcelona and, in particular, to the Eixample district, where some of his most important works are concentrated, such as the Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló or Casa Milà. The Eixample District, promoter of this event, promotes this tribute with the collaboration of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Gaudí Council, with the aim of recognizing both the international dimension of the architect and his roots in the city.

The act aims to highlight the contrast between the anonymous and tragic death of Gaudí – initially unrecognized after the accident – and the universal recognition that his figure has today. In this sense, the discovery of the plaque has a restorative and urban memory character: it fixes in the public space the memory of an episode that is part of both the biography of the architect and the history of the city.
