Next Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 6 p.m., in the Sala de la Caritat of the Biblioteca de Catalunya, the director of the Pompeu Fabra University’s Musical Technology Group and president of the Phonos Foundation, Xavier Serra, will give the conference “50 years of musical experimentation at Phonos”.

The event will take place within the framework ofexhibition “Phonos, 50 years of music and technology”which can be visited in the Library lobby until January 17, 2026.

Phonos was born in 1974 as one of the first sound composition and experimentation laboratories in southern Europe, driven by the need to create tools and spaces for new musical research. Today, 50 years later, Phonos is inseparable from the Pompeu Fabra University Music Technology Research Group and an ecosystem that combines creation, research and community, from experimental sound to global culture and open data projects such as Freesound or the development of musical instruments and tools.

This talk traces the origins, institutional integration and current projection of Phonos, a space that has turned sound experimentation into a tool for imagining, creating and sharing possible musical futures.

Free entry with limited capacity.

The event can be followed by streaming on YouTube channel of the Library of Catalonia.
