Comedies that do not die – Magazine Teatre Barcelona


Some comedies have the gift of keeping their validity intact despite the passage of time. This season, Barcelona recovers two that exemplified it fully: In front and back and The tenor. Two proposals that, despite from very different records, share an essence: they are popular shows behind which there are two souls from the TricyclePaco Mir and Carles Sans– That they continue to put the trade and comicity at the service of the viewer.

In front and back (Original title: Noises off,,,,,, Michael Frayn) It has become a contemporary classic of the Catalan billboard. It is a farce of metateatral messes – theater inside the theater – in which a disastrous company seeks to represent a play. Released for the first time in Catalonia in 1985 at the Condal Theater, he has met multiple successful rise in the Victoria Theater and the Goya (1996), and later in the Borràs (2002, 2010 and 2018). Now, in the framework of its 40th anniversary, returns to the Borràs from September 25 with an updated version that, as on previous occasions, signs Paco Mir. A fresh and renewed look at the classic, with an agile staging and faithful to the original spirit, and with a top -notch distribution that includes names as solvent as Jordi Banacolocha, Agnès Busquets, Jordi Díaz, Meritxell Huertas or Jordi Vidalamong others.

In parallel, The tenor recovers another Catalan tradition: the parodic version of Don Juan Tenorio than Mary Santpere and Joan Capri They popularized in the 70’s. For decades, the Zorrilla classic had been performed by All Saints as a kind of theatrical ritual linked to death and beyond. In our country, this practice acquired a more humorous tone thanks to free and customary adaptations such as those of these two mythical figures on the Catalan comic scene. Now, under the stamp ofRoofthe text is revised with dramaturgy ofIsrael Solàmember of The caloricand directed by Carles Sans, founder of the Tricycle. The proposal, which is first gathered on stage Silvia Abril and Andreu Buenafuentestarts from a nightmare where two stage spirits of the past claim that that tradition is resumed. From there, a comedy is unfolded that combines classic and contemporary gags, playful criticism and absurd situations. After premiering at Poliorama, the play returns to the Coliseum Theater from November 4.

These comedies do not only return for nostalgia. They do it because they work. Because, behind gag and parody, there is a way of doing theater that connects with the audience. A recognizable and lively humor that transforms each function into a collective party.
