Session 1 – Audiovisual documentary: creative processes and work with the pictures
With the filmmakers Paula Giménez Monar and Bernadette Webber, and the mediation of Júlia Lull
The filmmakers Bernadette Weber and Paula Giménez Monar offer a practical session around their experience in audiovisual creation. The images of the two artists dialogue in the foreground, in a meeting where the “documentary” denomination comes into crisis. What tensions and ambiguities are put into play in non -fiction cinema creation processes? Who translates reality, and what translates to it? Who do the pictures belong to? Where do they come from? The dialogue of filmmakers through the images invites us to question the representative function of non-fiction and to think about the tensions that appear in the creative process: between the subject and the thing, between the encounter and the discovery, between the data and the archive, between the images and the materials outside, between research and intuition. The images, in which the hope of understanding is deposited, however, place the artist and the public in the foreign land of what exceeds all representation, to all reconstruction. What processes, practices, and what forms of translation do these images claim? How do the filmmakers take care of them and accompany them, in order to do justice?
