Catalan Immigration History Museum
The permanent exhibitions of the mhic are divided in various areaslocated outside the museum and talk about migratory movements throughout history in Catalonia and the rest of the world.
- Space 1. The Andana. It is the Welcome to the Museum area. The MhiC has been conceived as a walk through several stations through which visitors pass and reflect on migratory processes.
- Space 2. Humans in motion. Humans in motion attempts an approach to history through the lens of human mobility. Concepts and terminologies associated with migration are examined through interactive and pedagogical museographic elements. It is an introductory walk from prehistory to the 20th century where visitors will delve deeper into concepts such as nomadism or the baggage linked to the migrant’s learning. We invite the public to experience prejudice and to analyze territoriality and identity as concepts associated with migratory processes.
- Space 3. Sevillano-Barcelona-Termino. Migrations of the s. 20th The emblematic train in which more than a million people arrived in Catalonia. A space full of emotions.
This area is located inside an old train car from the middle of the 20th century. A great piece that pays tribute to the entire population that arrived in Catalonia throughout the 20th century and without which we cannot understand Catalonia today. Inside this train, virtual travelers accompany the visitor along this route with their testimonies and memories. - Space 4. Space [Migrar]: the area dedicated to the migratory heritage of the present 21st century. The MhiC consolidates this space as a living collection in the process of construction. This exhibition area is located outside and invites the visitor to reflect on the immediate present and future of migrations and raises questions about how the reception itself shapes society’s identity.
- Space 5. Masia Can Serra. Reception and headquarters of temporary exhibitions.
The Masia building is the headquarters of the Immigration History Museum of Catalonia and the space for temporary exhibitions that are renewed periodically.
