Emili Pujol, Pau Casals and Gaspar Cassadó in Siena
Next Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at 6 p.m., the activity “La guitarra en temps de Pau Casals” will take place in the Sala de la Caritat of the Library of Catalonia. The event will begin with a short conference by Josep Maria Mangado, which will serve as an introduction to the concert offered by guitarist Jordi Sàbat Cots.
The conference will provide some historical and musical keys to contextualize the concert program, centered on the figure of Pau Casals and his artistic environment. It will also devote special attention to some of the works included in the program that are kept in the collections of the Biblioteca de Catalunya, documents of great interest for understanding the Catalan musical life of its time.
Pau Casals was one of the key figures in 20th century music in the Western world. Child of the romantic spirit of the late 19th century, he was able to move towards the new aesthetics, as well as reinterpret the old ones in an organic and genuine way. This concert wants to pay tribute to the master from Vendrell by making a sound print of that music that resonated with him in his life, but from the prism of the guitar, an instrument close to his beloved cello and very present in the Catalan culture of those times.
The program includes music by JS Bach and a series of composers of his time and environment: Vallenc Robert Gerhard; his disciple Gaspar Cassadó; his guitarist friend Emili Pujol; the mystical music of Mompou, and the avant-garde of Homs i Bonet, as well as some works by Jordi Sàbat himself.
Josep Maria Mangado is one of the greatest exponents of the historical study of the guitar in Catalonia. He has published numerous books and articles on this subject and has been awarded for his work in the field of guitar musicology.
Jordi Sàbat is an eclectic musician and guitarist who has developed his artistic career in stylistically diverse musical projects. He has performed throughout the Catalan and Spanish territory as well as abroad. With the Ribera-Sàbat guitar duo, formed with Maria Ribera, he has made two tours in different cities in China, and also in Tokyo and Buenos Aires. He currently combines his artistic work with teaching.
Free entry with limited capacity.
