The Ramon Llull Institute participates in the Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF), which takes place from June 17 to 21, with the aim of strengthening ties with the Chinese publishing sector and exploring new collaboration opportunities.
The IRL will have its own table in the rights center of the fair, a key business space, and has scheduled about 25 meetings with Chinese publishers. He will also hold a meeting with the team of the Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair and with the organization of the BIBF itself, with the intention of establishing new ways of cooperation with festivals, institutions and cultural agents in the country.
China is a strategic market for the international projection of Catalan literature and, on this occasion, it has the support of a publishing consultancy, Sonky Liu, which will help to advance and establish new bridges between both publishing worlds.
Before the covid-19 pandemic, the IRL maintained its own table in the rights center of the fair for four consecutive years, which allowed it to consolidate relations with Chinese publishers and increase the visibility of Catalan literature in the country.
The health crisis interrupted this continuity, but in recent years the fruits of that work have been evident: several works of Catalan literature have been published in China by publishers from that country. It is the case of Loneliness by Víctor Català (Sanghai 99, 2026), If you eat a lemon without grimacing by Sergi Pàmies (Archipel, 2025), I gave you eyes and you looked into the darkness by Irene Solà (ThinKingdom, 2025), Death and spring, Diamond Square y broken mirror by Mercè Rodoreda (Xiron, 2023 and 2024) and Uncertain Gloria by Joan Sales (Citic Press, 2022).
