03/19 – 7 p.m. Inauguration: MALGRAT EL MAR – A project by Futuro Berg Fredes.

From March 19 to April 28, 2026.

A project of Future Berg Fredes.

Malgrat El Mar plays on the name of the coastal town of Malgrat de Mar and its literal meaning in Catalan: despite the sea. This small change, from the name of the place to the sentence, opens up the meaning of the series. Because the sea here is not just landscape; it is border, risk, opportunity, distance. It is what separates and, at the same time, what is crossed.

In this town on the Catalan coast, a group of young migrants mostly from countries on the west coast of Africa, who after crossing the Mediterranean in search of a more dignified and secure future, find their first home in Europe.
Not all of them make it, and that’s why the title also points to this physical and symbolic distance that separates those who are already here from those who still dream of arriving: despite the risk and uncertainty of the crossroads.

For months, routines, conversations and silences were shared at a reception center in the village. The double presence of the author, the photographer and the social worker in the reception center made it possible to accompany everyday processes, language classes, administrative waits, afternoons without news, small celebrations, from a proximity that gave rise to these images.
