exhibition "Curriculum Garreta"

Juli Garreta i Arboix was born on March 12, 1875 in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, son of Esteve Garreta i Roig and Agnès Arboix i Costart. This year marks the 150th anniversary of his birth, and the exhibition is included in the activities of the Juli Garreta i Arboix Year. His father, a watchmaker and one of the most valued musicians in the town, taught him solfeggio and violin, training that his brothers also received. Garreta learned piano with Ramon Novi, and despite the cliché of his self-taught training, his musical learning was similar to that of other performers and composers around him. His name is deeply linked to the world of sardanas, since between 1897 and 1920 he wrote more than sixty of them. He is recognized for introducing symphonic procedures and creating an original language through the couplet, naturally transforming pieces of different instrumental formations into symphonic movements. His works constitute an authentic musical poetics of the Noucentisme. The exhibition collects his life and career and is presented in the format of a curriculum vitae. You can consult more information about the exhibition “Currículum Garreta” on the website of the Department of Culture. Last update: 15/01/2026
