Directed by Jumon Erra i Pol Sanuywith musical compositions and lyrics by Mireia Morerathe work moves between thriller, comedy and folk tale to build a song to resistance, to memory and to the celebration of difference. Inspired by the book Diary of a soldier of Peter Belartthe piece draws a bridge between generations to reflect on the physical and emotional borders that cross the ages.
The plot revolves around two artist brothers who see how their musical project is about to make the final leap. But just before the festival that could change their lives, one of them disappears. Overwhelmed by the pressure and uncertainty, he seeks refuge in a family home in El Pallars, where he is received by his godmother. “It’s the celebration of feathers, godmothers and music; because the revolution will be queer or it won’t be”.
“A refuge in the sun it’s a generational and rural musical, a journey between the past and the present, between family intimacy and the stage explosion”, explains Sanuy, who defines the proposal as “a celebration of feathers, godmothers and music; because the revolution will be queer or it won’t be”.
From family memory to queer punk
The starting point of the show is the diary of Pol Sanuy’s great-uncle, a young soldier during the Civil War. “It is a text that speaks of the family legacy, of the need to never lose the spirit of revolt against wars and fascism”, says the author and performer, who shares the stage with Mireia Morera i Asun Planas. The company transfers this memory to a dystopian present where “a virus brings people back in disguise” and where resistance is danced with techno and glitter. “We want to make you think through laughter”, adds Morera. “It’s like a pop-electronic rave, a leather and rural cabaret with humor, tenderness and political rage.”
With this premiere, the Co. Gemini consolidates its commitment to its own stage language, punky, queer and irreverent, where live music, performance and text theater coexist. after Artemispresented at the Teatre Condal within Grec 2024, the collective reaffirms its commitment to a dissident theatrical creation, original and rooted in the territory.
