Display "The infamy"

The main European countries have been reviewing their colonial past for several years now and their role in the traffic of enslaved people. In recent years, some historians from all over the country have begun to worry about this topic and have begun to draw a hidden past, more important than we thought. At the same time, the interest of the public, in which many people from the old Spanish colonies have been incorporated, has grown greatly. The Barcelona Maritime Museum takes part in this process with the aim of questioning contemporary Catalan society, much more plural and complex than that of that time, so that it is committed to reviewing the past. And so that, in this way, it is, without further contemplation, with the trace that infamy left in today’s society in the form of racism or over -exploitation of the migrant population. The exhibition “The infamy” deepens the Catalan participation in the Atlantic traffic of captive people to be enslaved and at what extent the business of Catalan merchants, especially in Cuba and Puerto Rico, acquired enslaved labor. How many of those capitals were repatriated in Catalonia and how those benefits of slavery helped the development of the country in the 19th century? This exhibition unmasks a little known and very uncomfortable aspect of the history of Catalonia. We also spread the darkest aspects of history and make it possible to never repeat. Initial script by Antonio Tortajada, scientific advice of Martín Rodrigo and museographic project of Ignacio Cristià.
