Display "Fernando Botero. A universal teacher"

Just over a year since his death, the Martorell Palace hosts the most complete painting exhibition ever held in Spain, with which he pays tribute to Fernando Botero (Medellín, Colombia, 1932 – Monaco, 2023), one of the most important artists of the 20th century who is already part of the history of art. His creative, original and new proposal, through a language of monumental volumes and vibrating color, gave rise to his own style, boterism, which makes his work immediately recognized. The exhibition, curated by Lina Botero and Cristina Carrillo de Albornoz, explores the extraordinary versatility of Fernando Botero in the use of the different pictorial techniques and the richness that this meant for his work. For this reason, a group of more than 110 works, much of them unpublished, came from private collections, which includes sculptures, oils, watercolors, bloodthirsty, carbonets and pencil drawing. “Fernando Botero. A universal teacher” also analyzes the important relationship of the Colombian artist with Spain and Italy, as well as the key influence that both countries had in his work. For this reason, two exceptional works will be seen for the first time in our country: a version of ‘Las Meninas’ by Velázquez, which has always been hung in the Parisian studio of Botero, and ‘Homage to butter’, an extraordinary lender from a private collection in the United States, which was recently discovered by Lina Botero through Christie’s. These pieces include, among others, their iconic series with the classic themes that were most estimated, such as those dedicated to Latin America, circus, religion, dead nature and their versions of masterpieces in the history of art.
