To the Swiss photographer Robert Frank It was not easy for him to find a visual narrative or a publisher for the photographs he had taken on several trips around the US, funded by a Guggenheim scholarship. Luck, if it exists, joined it with the French publisher Robert Delpire, and on an endy -mounted night they set up the narrative of the book that would be part of the collection together. Encyclopédie essentiellefrom the same publisher. Thus, in a summary, he went out to France on May 15, 1958 The Americansthe following year would be published in the United States with the name of The Americans. The rest is history.

If something can define well the American dream is a car on an endless road and if a book reflects this trip is The Americans by Robert Frank.

Secondary stories It is a course of language and visual storytelling in which an analytical reading of the book is proposed, as three narrative exercises are proposed inspired by the book.

Methodology

Teaching to read and narrate readers through the different compositional and technical alternatives offered by the photographic medium in combination with the pages of a book. For this we will have two hours of collective reading of the book and then three exercises that will have to be done in pairs.

Goal

The aim of the workshop is to delve into Robert Frank’s legendary book to better understand it and see the narrative decisions that both the author and the publisher had to make. In this way we will delve into the understanding of the narrative and the possibilities of an image due to its polysemy.
