The Women of Negro
of rober Astorgano

In a section away, in the lands of the interior of Spain, next to a ravine not much
away from the capital of what is today La Rioja, since 1936 a group of
women always dressed in black, who every year the same day gathered around a
Piece of land, guarding it.
For four decades, loyal to their task, they watched and protected the place because
No one touched him, so that he would never forget. In this land nothing grows, the importance
resides under her. Here are the bodies of more than four hundred people
killed by rebellious and paramilitary military during the fall of 1936, buried
In three large mass graves. They are their widows, mothers, daughters and sisters,
Known since then as the Women of Negro.
Despite the humiliations and harassment that suffered throughout their lives, these
brave and determined women achieved with their struggle that in 1979 the site is
Become a civil cemetery. Today constituted as the La Barranca Memorial, this
Monumental ensemble is one of the elders in Spain.
The story of the Women of Negro is an example of courage and pride. A story
of love, of struggle, of strength and perseverance, but also of sadness and of tragedy. Naked
story that cries out to be told, in a place where silence marked their
Protagonists.
