11/12 – 19 h. Opening: Silvia Isach’s latent inheritance

December 11 to January 17

A project by Sílvia Isach

From the unexpected death of the father due to asbestos, the author began a visual search for the dark story of this material: a whitish mineral surrounded by silence, pain and struggle.

Asbestos was used around the world, especially during the period of strong economic growth after World War II, in a context of misinformation, negligence and breach of the health protection regulations of exposed workers. In Spain, its use and commercialization were banned in 2002. However, the effects of inhalation of asbestos fibers may occur after a latency period of up to 40 years.

With the aim of understanding the causes of the father’s death and finding answers, Isach addresses this issue from a global perspective and involving different fronts. People affected by asbestos, relatives of victims, active workers who live in alert, as well as locations and workspaces that acted as a focus of pollution. The current struggle against the lack of rights and the emergency situation for the withdrawal of this material from everywhere is visible. That way, The latent inheritance It aspires to become a catalyst for social pain and inherent injustice, making personal memory a collective complaint.
