An unexpected family archive: The Hausmann Collection

Mercedes Hausmann (Madrid, 1987) is a photographer, retouching and post -production teacher in various private institutions in Spain. He currently develops his doctoral research at the Complutense University of Madrid.
In 2021, after the death of his mother, he reached his hands a set of photographs belonging to his maternal family. This archive, of extraordinary historical and emotional value, is a visual testimony of the evolution of photography in Spain between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, gathering works of some of the most prestigious studies and photographers in the country, such as Laurent, Disdéri, Fernando Debas, Káulak, Franzen, Pacheco …

Within this inherited collection, two sides are distinguished: the Archive of Madrid, which covers around 400 photographs of the Martínez-Corera and the Arespacochaga, and the Galicia Archive, composed of about 200 images between photographs and postcards of the Cantero and the Casal.
Not only did this discovery reconstruct fragments of its own genealogy, but also led her to research in depth the dynamics of the portrait in Spain during this period, exploring her role as a symbol of historical status and document. As a result of this process, the Hausmann collection is born, a set of images that links family memory to the history of photography, offering a perspective on the mechanisms of production, circulation and meaning of these portraits.
In the framework of Photoconnection, a association dedicated to the study and dissemination of photographic heritage, Mercedes Hausmann invites us to a personal journey through nineteenth and early twentieth century Spanish photography, analyzing how these images transcend the private to become a reflection of a society in transformation.

In addition, he will share his first -person genealogical research process, showing how he identified some of the portraits and rebuilt their stories from visual and documentary sources. Finally, he will reveal unpublished details about his next exhibition, where this collection will gain a new meaning within a more scope project.
