The Window on Death Row
by Linda Catherine Freund
Duration: 38 min
Spain, 2025
Director / Producer / Editor: Linda Catherine Freund
synopsis
Joaquín José Martínez, the first Spaniard exonerated from death row in the United States, was once a supporter of capital punishment until, at the age of 24, he was convicted of a double murder in Florida. He spent more than five years behind bars, three of them on death row.
Two decades after his exoneration, Joaquín transforms his personal trauma into a public defense.
The Window on Death Row raises pressing questions: Is there an ethical reason to kill someone? Is closure possible for the families of the victims? And how do we reconcile the contradiction that facing a death sentence, even an unjust one, can, paradoxically, give us a second chance in life?
OTOXO Screen
OTOXO Pantalla is a monthly series of documentary screenings and discussions that celebrates films with a spirit of defiant joy — stories that tackle global issues through hope, inspiration and human connection.
The aim of the initiative is to bring to the public works that invite reflection, dialogue and understand our world from new perspectives, and to create a space where filmmakers and spectators can share experiences and points of view in an open and accessible environment.
From December, the screenings will take place on a selected Wednesday of each month, in sessions that will combine cinema, conversation and community.
