The monsters and fears of Josep Maria Miró


Fear is one of the main obsessions of the dramaturgy of Josep Maria Miró. The work, with production from the Trono Room, won the Quim Masó Prize and will premiere on July 3 in the Beckett Room, within the framework of the Grec Festival.

For Miró, fear is “engine and obstacle: two seemingly antagonistic concepts that are two sides of the same coin”. Fear can move you or can paralyze you. In this sense, he considers that it is “the great system of social control of our time”. For this new creation, it is not fixed on fear and its consequences, but on the monsters we build, in the need we have as a community to create monsters. The playwright sees a concern about society “that wants to place red lines between what is good and what is wrong.”

For the small mountain village where the action takes place, the monster that gives its name to the work is responsible for a brutal action. Twenty years after the events (of which the playwright does not want to make a spoiler), the return of this being in the rural environment causes that the apparent normality shakes. Albert Prat i Aurea Marquez embodies a restless couple for this return and Joan Negrié puts on the shoes of a third character who mutates in a way throughout the play, under the name “someone”.

This last text connects with the rural and linguistic rich universe that Josep Maria Miró has been cultivating in his last works: The most beautiful body … and The butler. Regarding the form of the work, which the description defines as “an ambitious formal and interpretative game,” Miró states that “it is a writing with which the concept of space and time changes on many occasions”, with “various plans of reality”.

With The monsterSo, the playwright takes another step in his career as a brave author in the topics he deals with, innovative in the ways he uses and committed to the Catalan language. For lovers of Miró’s works, he predicts one of the essential of this year’s Greek.
