The Andalusian inheritance takes life in the Phoenix Room
The Andalusian past of the Iberian Peninsula is one of the most fascinating and at the same time silenced periods in our history. Between the 8th and 15th centuries, Al-Andalus became a center of coexistence and cultural exchange between Muslims, Christians and Jews, promoting an artistic, scientific and philosophical legacy that still resonates today. However, the official account has often relegated this past to a secondary role, presenting it as an anomaly more than an essential part of what we are today.
With this premise, the company Espurna Theater proposes Trampantojo, or the story of the history of Spaina multidisciplinary show that questions the hegemonic story about the Andalusian past of the Iberian Peninsula. With dramaturgy and direction of Maria Villarejo Barberàthe work proposes an exercise in historical memory that seeks to rescue the diversity and cultural richness of this key period. The premiere will take place in the Fenix Room from March 5.
A journey between memory and identity
Through a combination of text, visual theater, dance, singing and projections, Cheater It explores how the invisibility of the Andalusian footprint has shaped an exclusionary identity that ignores an essential part of its history. The company calls into question the dominant discourse on the recapture and the Islamic invasion, key elements in the official historical narrative that have helped to erase or minimize the Andalusian influence on our culture.
With a documentary theater format, the show gives voice to different characters that revise this past from a contemporary perspective. The show uses various stage languages to generate an immersive experience: from the live performance of Sephardic and Popular songs, the use of Chinese projections and shadows or dance with choreography inspired by flamenco.
Through this proposal, Espurna Teatre claims the recognition of cultural diversity as a structural element of our society. At a time when the debate on historical identity and memory is more alive than ever, Cheater It is presented as a tool for reflection and dialogue about the need to review the past to better understand the present.
