Every time we open and close a Market Flea we are going home with the feeling that we have put our grain of sand for several things: we have encouraged the circular and local economy, especially among young women; We have given life to thousands of garments that would have ended in the trash; And we have avoided that new clothes be bought, that it would have continued to contaminate our planet. But it turns out that it is not just a sensation: it is true.
We have just closed our 2024 survey and our tears jump. We have rediscovered that our markets are and give life. 85.9% of the people who come to the market also visit Barri’s businesses and spending their Euritos in them. Promoting the local economy. In addition, we know that many of these people are opening windows and doors to other areas of the city, because 65.9% of the respondents would not have visited that part of Barcelona if there had not been a Market Flea for them.
But the best of our markets is its people. We are proud that Flea Market is a feminized market (in addition to feminist, of course). 82.8% of the sellers and clients are women. People of all ages participate in the markets, but more than half are between 18 and 35 years old. We are an alternative of fun, sustainable leisure and away from alcoholic proposals that usually bombard youth.
Our markets come from all social class to our markets. Although the majority that have full -time job, they are 39.8%. They are followed by those who have part -time job (20.3%). For both of them and the students, who are the next social group that comes to our markets (16.4%) we are more than leisure. Flea Market does a social work: a little push, a cane to reach the end of the month and survive in this city that is so uphill. 21.2% go home with between 200 and 300 euros and 15.2% with between 300 and 500. Nothing bad. The money is also distributed equally: 47.7% of visitors spend between 20 and 50 euros in each market.
So you come to a market, as a seller or as a customer, you spend money on local trade, discover a new neighborhood, sell what you no longer need and discover any treasure. What else do you want? More of all. 87.9% of participants would like to be able to reserve a place in our markets once a year, a good proof of what Flea Market triumphs. Because more and more people are dedicated to launching projects that use our markets as a showcase, which makes us a fundamental piece of the economy of Barcelona.
It is also varied what those who come to Flea Market are looking for. 70.3% want markets in which there is second hand and vintage clothes, but also crafts and design. We do not forget that the percentage is still high, 28.1%, of those who prefer to focus only on vintage and second hand, which has always been our nucleus. But the activities that we have incorporated into the markets, like. Everything must be said. At 28.9% the DJs have freaked out – let’s note! – and at 22.7% the workshops – we also take note. That there are foodtrucks and other food options has shown 21.9%, what would be a market with an empty stomach? That a growing 9.4% are interested in children’s activities, it makes us very happy because it speaks that we are accessible and for all audiences: there will be more.
We want to give you a huge hug and an infinite thanks for everything you have given us this year. You are many who ask us to make more markets, that they are more followed, that last more days. We also know that many want the most popular markets to return in which the entrance is free. For us it is clear: a market should be a right that any city council would have to facilitate. For our part, we are working to have more opportunities and bring you more and better Market in 2025. Long life to the Flea!
