New directions for the iconic Raval and Gaudí theaters
Barcelona’s theater scene announces changes this season to the already announced return of the Sala Muntaner, plus the reorientation of two iconic spaces: the Raval Theater and the Gaudí Theater. With a history rooted in the creation and exhibition of plays, both theaters will live a new stage under new directions and approaches, marking a turning point in their trajectory.
Pep Tosar takes the helm of Teatre del Raval
The Raval Theaterafter 17 years of activity, temporarily closes its doors due to the lack of public funding, as confirmed by the current director Empar López. The room, which had been a point of reference for independent production and the recovery of classics, will pass into the hands of the Majorcan actor and director Pep Tosartogether with Evelyn Arevalo. Tosar, who already directed the Maldà, has advanced that the new project will include a comprehensive reform of the space to adapt it to modern technical needs and host shows that stand out from strictly commercial logic.

“This city has very few medium-sized spaces that allow the economic viability of productions”, highlights Tosar: “Our objective is to create a theater of ideas and culture, without fear of these concepts”. The team is already working on biographical proposals about figures like Federico García Lorca, Fernando Pessoa i Miguel Hernandezand in collaborations with other companies that share this artistic vision. Despite the pending bureaucratic obstacles, they hope to have the project underway as soon as the Barcelona City Council approves the works.
Gaudí embarks on a new stage with the production company Buganvilia
On the other hand, the Gaudí Theater begins a new stage with the production company taking over management bougainvillea. After 16 years leading the project, the playwright Ever Blanchet and the actress Maria Clausó they step aside for personal reasons, leaving the management in the hands of Gemma Deusedas, Anna Carreno i Marius Hernandez. The production company, with long experience in theater production and pedagogy, has enthusiastically taken on the challenge of continuing to build Gaudí’s audience loyalty, while expanding it with proposals for teenagers and families.

“We want to excite and make the public think, working on themes that we will consolidate over time”, said Hernández, who has announced a program that will include theater and dance shows. The new season will begin on October 3 with the play Annaof Marc Torrecillasand will continue with replenishment of hits like The lying days of Marta Aran or The Tiger of Ramon Madaula and the premiere of the musical Lizzie.
