Musical empowerment: ‘SIX’ moves from London to Barcelona
The Coliseum Theater in Barcelona is preparing to receive, from April 24 to May 15, SIXone of the musicals that has captivated audiences worldwide with its energy, humor and message of female empowerment. Created by Toby Marlow i Lucy Mossthis show reimagines the stories of Henry VIII’s six wives in a vibrant pop concert, where the protagonists take control of the story.
With more than 3.5 million viewers annually, one billion views on digital platforms and 35 international awards, including two Tony Awards, SIX arrives in Barcelona directly from London’s West End in its original version, thanks to Julia Gómez Coraresponsible for having brought to Spain musicals like The Lion King or Les Misérables.
An international success story
Born as a final year project of Marlow and Moss at the University of Cambridge, SIX premiered in 2017 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Its feminist and innovative spirit made it an immediate success, which has evolved to become a global reference of the genre. “This is not just another musical; it’s a work that breaks molds and reinvents the genre,” explains Julia Gómez Cora: “With a narrative starring women and an overflowing energy, this piece connects directly with younger audiences.”
From its official debut in the West End in 2019 and on Broadway in 2021, SIX he has accumulated accolades and conquered stages in London, New York, Australia and South Korea. The musical is also the second most listened to album in the history of the genre, surpassed only by Hamilton.
Queens of pop and voices of empowerment
A SIX, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Joan Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard i Catalina Parr they transform into pop icons, competing to prove who had the hardest life alongside the famous Tudor king. With songs that refer to stars like Beyoncé, Adele i Ariana Grandethe six queens share their stories with a contemporary speech that celebrates female resilience and strength.
“This musical is not only fun and modern, but also claims the power of women throughout history,” adds Gómez Cora. SIX it is not a simple show: it is a debate in the form of a concert about equality, representation and the role of art in the reinterpretation of the past”.
