Catalunya Freestyle, the first impromptu rap competition in Catalan in history, takes a big step forward. Last September 22, the second qualifying day was held in Plaça de Catalunya, as part of the Mercè festivities, bringing together 62 improvisers and more than 4,000 spectators. The success of the event shows that the freestyle Catalan is popular and is here to stay.

The competition started the engines at five in the afternoon. A Plaça de Catalunya full of fans of the freestyle he witnessed battle after battle, as the circle of participants dwindled. Finally, after a frantic final round against Eudald Reinés, glossator Gerard Viladomat was crowned the winner. Apart from the battles, the event featured musical performances by the rapper Santa Salut and the beatboxer Cardona.

A week later, on September 28, the Mutacions Festival hosted the Terrassa regional competition. In this test, the Barcelona improviser took the crown Zoyert. After Terrassa, two more qualifiers will be held, in Lliçà de D’Amunt and Andorra. But it doesn’t end there: the four semi-finalists from each of the regional tests will face off in the great Catalan final at the beginning of next year.

Catalunya Freestyle was born in 2021 with the collaboration of several organizations from the local urban scene: the Raplegats collective, the Gold Battle and the Llobregat Block Party Cultural Association. The initiative appears with the desire to weave a community of freestylers in Catalan, emphasizing the promotion of the use of the language and the cohesive nature of collective creation. Catalunya Freestyle received the Lluís Carulla 2022 prize for the best idea and, since its pilot test, held last February 17, it has only grown. The project has shown not only that Catalan rap has strength, but also it has high potential as a transformative tool.
